Swing bridge De Oversteek
The municipality of Rijswijk wanted a bicycle- and pedestrian bridge over the Rhine-Schie Canal. This canal formed a huge barrier to slow traffic that wanted to travel from one side of Rijswijk to the other. An extensive study of variants led to the final location and the bridge type. The rotatable pylon bridge allows cyclists and pedestrians to easily cross the Schie and offers shipping a particularly wide passage. In addition, it is a new landmark for the city.
The bridge with a span of 35m consists of an asymmetrically placed steel pylon, a moveable steel deck and 12 steel cables connecting the two.
(Steel) construction
The bridge with a span of 35m consists of an asymmetrically placed steel pylon, a moveable steel deck and 12 steel cables connecting the two. The integrated steel barrier boxes are on the bridge edge and link up perfectly with the fence
Realisation
The bridge was made and finished in the workshop of Machinefabriek Emmen and then transported to the location by boat. Mid-May, the steel construction was placed in two days. Mid-July the first cyclists crossed the bridge.
A lot of attention was paid to obtaining the smoothest possible finish. For example, welds can only be seen at the kink lines in the steelwork. Furthermore, the seam plates have been placed on a grid, so that visible seams are in any case not disturbing in terms of lining. The contractor has taken extra care to the finish of welds and burrs. The highly sustainable coating system is also tailored to the desired smooth finish.
