Johan Friso Lock Stavoren

The Johan Friso Lock connects the Ijsselmeer with the Frisian lake area. For water sports enthusiasts, the lock is an important gateway to the province. The old lock was almost half a century old. In terms of capacity and safety, the lock was no longer adequate.

More capacity

In high season, the Johan Friso Lock was bottleneck for shipping traffic. The waiting time increased to more than two hours on the busiest days. The construction of the second lock put an end to these long waiting times and solves the capacity problem at least until the year 2050.

Safer
In a strong south-westerly wind, unsafe situations arose at the lock, especially when many boats had to wait in the outer harbour. This will hardly occur anymore in the new situation. The design of the new lock also provides more safety. This leaves more space for manoeuvring. In addition, the shorter waiting times ensure less stress.

Climate proof

The new lock is climate proof. For the next fifty years, the new lock will withstand increases in the water level and higher waves. Machinefabriek Emmen has, as subcontractor of Ballast Nedam, realized the lock gates and bridge of the new lock and completely renovated the existing lock and bridge.
