GRONINGEN – The deck of the new Berlage Bridge in Groningen was lifted into place on Tuesday afternoon by crane vessel ‘Triton’ of Wagenborg. The movable part of the bridge weighs 210 tons, is 17 meters long and 17 meters wide. The bridge over the Eemskanaal will be 25 meters long and 25 meters wide in total. The so-called ‘tail’ bridge fully consists of steel and will be reinforced by with 150 tons of steel. With this type of bascule bridge, the ‘tail’ and the ballast box are located above and next to the road surface. The bridge is built by Machinefabriek Emmen. Dura Vermeer from Zoetermeer and J.J. de Vries from Sneek are the main contractors. The bridge will have two traffic lanes of 3,25 meters wide, a separate cycle path of 2,25 meters and a footpath of 2,5 meters wide. The Berlage Bridge forms the new north-south connection in Groningen that should relieve the congestion on the ring road and must be completed by the end of 2010.
